Why Get Involved?

The Ontario College of Teachers, Ontario’s teaching regulator, welcomes your involvement in our governance process.

Like accounting, nursing and engineering, teaching is a regulated profession. In Ontario, this means the College oversees more than 230,000 Ontario Certified Teachers (OCTs) working in all publicly funded elementary and secondary schools as well as some private schools.

Like the self-regulatory bodies overseeing the accounting, nursing and engineering professions, we are also overseen by a governing body and funded by licensing fees.

We set the ethical standards and standards of the profession and are also responsible for initial and ongoing teacher education, licensing, and discipline.

We are in the process of forming our new governing body, which will involve an equal number of the members of the public and Ontario Certified Teachers.

There are a number of benefits to getting involved including:

  • Help protect student safety and well-being: Much like accounting, nursing and engineering, teaching is a regulated profession. Only licensed professionals — Ontario Certified Teachers (OCTs) — can teach in the province’s publicly funded elementary and secondary schools. In Ontario, there are more than two million students attending these schools. The College’s governing body and committees ensure the College meets its mandate of protecting these students and ensuring their well-being.
  • Grow your professional and regulatory expertise: By applying and serving, you will have the opportunity to use and grow your professional experience and knowledge in regulation and education.
  • Make a difference in education: Members of Council, committees and rosters will be able to make a tangible difference in the regulation of the teaching profession and in student protection and well-being.

Applications for governance positions are accepted year-round and will be held for review until the annual selection process, which occurs at the end of each calendar year.
