York Dean Appointed to College of Teachers Council

TORONTO – Respected educator and academic Stan Shapson joins the Council
of the Ontario College of Teachers as a new public appointee, College Chair
Donna Marie Kennedy announced last week.
Shapson was appointed by an Order-in-Council of the Ontario government to
join the College’s Council, which is made up of 17 elected teachers and 14
public appointees from across the province. The Council deals with regulation
issues ranging from teacher certificates and standards of practice to discipline.
"I’ve always had a keen interest in the work of College of Teachers because
it tackles issues of great importance for the future of public education in
Ontario," said Shapson.
Shapson replaces Pierre Calvé, Dean of Education at the University of Ottawa,
who stepped down as public appointee to Council for family reasons.
Currently professor and Dean of the Faculty of Education at York University,
Shapson is also president of the Canadian Association of Deans of Education.
Before joining York University in 1990, he was Associate Dean and Director
of Professional and Undergraduate programs at Simon Fraser University in British
Columbia. He received a Ph.D. in Development Psychology from York University
in 1973.
